Not Every Mommy

"Mommy, who is your husband?"

"Daddy is."

Or, wait.  Daddy was.  Is.  Was.

Damn those verb tenses.

"Actually, I don't have a husband anymore.  But when Daddy was alive, he was my husband."

Yes, love conquers the grave.

But on a questionnaire, 'Are you married or single?'  I'm single.  He was my husband.

"Do you think Poppa could be your husband, Mommy?"

"No, he's my dad."

"Do you think I could be your husband?"

"No, kiddo.  It just doesn't work that way."

It's okay, buddy.  Not every mommy has one.
