Unfailing Love

"The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him,

on those who hope in his unfailing love,

to deliver them from death

and keep them alive in famine.

We wait in hope for the Lord;

he is our help and our shield.

In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.

May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord,

even as we put our hope in you."

Psalm 33: 18-22

I encountered this verse again this morning, underlined in my Bible with my handwriting in the margin: Our Move to Colorado.

Robb and I claimed the last part of that passage as we sought to move across the country, from the midwest to the mountain high. It was a bold move; it required leaving familiar behind, stepping out of the boat, and defying what others thought we were capable of. And we did it.

"In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.

May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord,

even as we put our hope in you."

It was our first major transition. Just us. Husband and wife. No kids yet. We continued to look to each other and say, with a twinkle in our eyes, "We can do this. We can. We'll do this."

And we did it. We found our new home, our new life, our new community. We did it.

Eight years later, Robb is gone.

It's just me and the boys, and here we stand: at the precipice of a major transition.

And I am again reminded of this verse.

"In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.

May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord,

even we put our hope in you."

He was faithful then; he'll be faithful now. The journey is longer, the cavern is deeper, the path is darker, and there is so much less known or predictable.

But we'll do it, guys. We can do this.

"May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you."
